But the partnership with Smith & Wesson stopped here. The controlling interest of Taurus was re-acquired in 1977 by the company principals, severing ties with the Smith & Wesson brand and initiating a diversified expansion program in handgun development and manufacturing.
Following Beretta’s completion of a contract to manufacture small arms for the Brazilian Army, Taurus purchased the entirety of Beretta’s Sao Paulo operation in 1980, including technical specifications, tooling, and machinery and also acquired the company’s experienced workforce. This acquisition led to the development of the renowned Taurus PT92 9mm stainless pistol and PT99 9mm Taurus handguns. In 1982, the company sought to make themselves more accessible in America.
